This year, the FORVS board decided to build upon one of our most loved annual traditions: the Snowflake Trail. First established in 2021, the trail was created to introduce the wider community to our newly re-accessible ten-acre woodland pathway. What began as a simple, joyful idea has since grown into a much-anticipated Christmas activity for families, and we’re delighted to say it continues to be a wonderful success.
Each year, the Snowflake Trail invites little ones (and grown-ups too!) to wander through the woodland in search of wooden snowflakes displayed along the path. Children are encouraged to spot them, count them, and at the end of their walk, take a snowflake home as a keepsake. It’s a gentle, imaginative activity that celebrates the magic of the season while encouraging families to enjoy the outdoors together. Best of all, it remains an environmentally friendly way to experience the woodlands during the festive period, without disturbing the natural beauty of the space.
After several successful years of the trail itself, the board felt this was the perfect time to add “a little something extra” to mark the opening of the Snowflake Trail for 2025. With the help of dedicated volunteers, the event was expanded into a cosy, welcoming celebration that brought even more festive cheer to the woods.
This year, visitors were greeted by twinkling snowflake lights marking the trail entrance, setting the tone from the very first step. Alongside the familiar snowflake hunt, hot chocolates were available for a small donation—an especially welcome treat on a crisp winter day. At Basecamp 1, a very special volunteer Santa took up residence, offering free candy canes and a friendly listening ear to children eager to share their Christmas wishes. The smiles, laughter, and excitement made all the planning worthwhile.
As with any growing event, there were definitely lessons learned along the way. Trying something new always brings opportunities to improve, and we’re proud of what was achieved with the time and resources available. These things take time to build, and each year helps lay the groundwork for the next. With that in mind, you can expect even more decorations, more festive flair, and a little extra “oomph” next year as we continue working hard to grow this free community event.
Most importantly, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along, walked the trail, enjoyed a hot chocolate, chatted with Santa, or simply stopped to say hello. Your support, smiles, and kind words mean the world to us and remind us why events like this are so special.
We can’t wait to welcome you back to the Snowflake Trail next year—bigger, brighter, and just as magical. ✨
