This area of the River Rea was formerly unmanaged and includes from Dogpool Lane to Cartland Road
This area is roughly 9.74 hectares.
The Woodland Conservation Area and a small patch on the Park side called Site 179 are SLINCS. Site 179 is the oldest section of Ten Acres (not interfered with by the river canalisation in the 70’s at which point it was noted as an ’emerging woodland’ with a variety of plant life no longer present today).
Ten Acres Conservation is a community project developed and managed by Sustainable Life Birmingham. So far with the help of volunteers they have:
- Restored the woodland path for public access
- Improved Canopy light and woodland access
- Built wildlife habitats across the site
- Fully restored the Lost Orchard area
- Continue to work to remove invasive pest species
- Litterpicked over 100 bags of litter from the site and river plus various other large items
- Conducted Bird, Bat, River and Plant surveys on the site
- Restored a handful of lost plant species, previously unable to grow due to site neglect.
- Improved overall site safety
