River Rea Volunteering Update: Tackling Balsam and Crack Willow

River Rea Volunteering Update: Tackling Balsam and Crack Willow

It’s been another busy and rewarding week for our volunteer team along the River Rea, with two productive sessions making a real difference to our local green spaces.

Friday Evening: Balsam Bash!
On Friday evening, volunteers of all ages joined forces to tackle the ever-persistent Himalayan Balsam along the river. This invasive plant might look pretty, but it spreads quickly and outcompetes native vegetation, weakening riverbanks and damaging biodiversity. Thanks to everyone who came along and got stuck in — every bit of balsam pulled helps create space for native plants and strengthens the banks against erosion.

With continued effort over the coming weeks, we’re hoping to see noticeable improvements in the health and biodiversity of the river corridor. If we keep at it, we can make a lasting impact.

Saturday: Crack Willow Cleanup in Ten Acres
Saturday’s session focused on the fallen crack willow near the Bewdley Road entrance in Ten Acres. It’s been a bit of a mammoth task, but the team is making great progress. Clearing this large tree is not only improving access and appearance, but it’s also an important safety measure.

Crack willows are known for dropping large limbs or falling entirely, especially in windy weather. It’s a good reminder to stay cautious around mature trees, particularly after storms. There are still several wind-damaged trees in the area to deal with, so thank you for your patience as we work through them.

Want to Get Involved?
We’re always looking for new hands to join the team! If you’d like to help out, we’ve got two upcoming sessions this week:

  • Next Balsam Bash: Friday at 6pm
  • River Rea Management Session: Saturday, 11am–2pm

Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or just fancy giving it a go, you’ll be warmly welcomed. No experience necessary — just bring enthusiasm, suitable clothing, and a willingness to muck in!
