Volunteer Update: Finishing Work at Harvest Green 🌿

Last Friday’s volunteer session was another fantastic example of what a dedicated group of people can achieve when they come together with a shared purpose. A huge thank you to everyone who came along and put in the time and energy to help care for the River Rea corridor.

Our focus once again was the Harvest Green area at the Beilby section of the River Rea, where we’ve been gradually working to manage dense bramble growth and remove litter from the area. Over several sessions this stretch has required a lot of careful effort, but last week’s team arrived ready to get stuck in. Thanks to a phenomenal collective effort, we were able to finish clearing the remaining bramble and tidy the area just in time as the warmer weather begins to arrive.

Seasonal changes always bring both opportunities and challenges for conservation work. As spring temperatures rise, bird nesting season begins, which means our work must be carried out with extra care and awareness. Our volunteers are always mindful of the wildlife that shares these green spaces, and we take care to check areas thoroughly before cutting or clearing vegetation. This can slow progress considerably, but protecting nesting birds and other wildlife is always the priority.

Because of that careful and thoughtful approach, the team worked steadily and respectfully through the remaining patches of bramble and litter. By the end of the session, the difference was clear to see. The stretch of riverbank now looks far more open and welcoming, and importantly, it has been cleared safely and responsibly, ensuring wildlife has been protected along the way.

With this work now completed, this section can have a well-earned rest from bramble clearance and litter picking for a while, giving both volunteers and the local ecosystem a chance to breathe. It’s always rewarding to reach the end of a longer task like this and see the results of everyone’s dedication.

Sessions like this highlight just how important our volunteers are. Their commitment not only improves the appearance of the area but also helps maintain healthier habitats along the River Rea, making the space more enjoyable for wildlife and the local community alike.

If you’d like to get involved, we would love to see you at a future session. Our volunteer group meets every Friday from 10am to 2pm, and new faces are always welcome. Whether you can join for the full session or just drop by for a short time, every bit of help makes a difference.

📍 Meeting point: Ten Acres noticeboard on Cartland Road.

Come along, lend a hand, and see what we get up to next along the river! 🌱
