A Wild Feast in the Sunshine: Fireside Gatherings, Foraged Food, and Community Learning

This week, our fireside group came together under glorious sunshine for another memorable gathering filled with warmth, laughter, and incredible food. With the weather in full force, we embraced the outdoors and enjoyed an afternoon of fire, kombucha, cuppas, and a feast unlike any other.

At the request of participants, Sustainable Life prepared a wild-inspired menu that celebrated the abundance of edible plants growing all around us. It was a meal rooted in seasonal living, foraging, and creativity — proving once again that some of the best ingredients are often the ones found right under our feet.

The spread was as beautiful as it was delicious. We served wild garlic aioli, packed with vibrant flavour, alongside beer-battered dandelion fritters that offered a crisp and earthy bite. A mixed wild salad brought freshness and colour to the table, featuring ground elder, hawthorn leaves, a variety of edible flowers, chives, three-cornered leek, and wild garlic capers for an extra punch of flavour. To round things out, vegan feta and grapes were added for balance, creating a dish that was both nourishing and visually stunning.

It truly was a feast for the eyes as much as for the stomach.

These gatherings are about much more than food. They are about connection — to nature, to traditional skills, and to each other. Sharing meals outdoors around the fire creates a space for conversation, learning, and community in a way that feels both grounding and joyful.

Next week, the group has requested something entirely different: learning how to ponass a fish. It’s always exciting to see participants shape the direction of these sessions, and we’re looking forward to exploring another practical and traditional skill together. If you’d like to join us, please do give us a heads-up so we can make sure there is enough fish for everyone involved.

While the day was a great success, the intensity of the heat meant we had to finish an hour earlier than planned. The sun was relentless, and everyone was beginning to feel the effects. In true problem-solving spirit, we’ll be bringing a tarp next week to provide some much-needed shade and make the experience even more comfortable.

Every week brings something new, and that’s what makes these gatherings so special — whether it’s discovering wild flavours, learning hands-on skills, or simply spending time in good company around the fire.

We’re already looking forward to next week’s session and seeing familiar and new faces alike.

Until then — stay curious, stay connected, and keep living sustainably.
