There’s something special about gathering around a fire. The warmth, the smell of food cooking outdoors, good conversation, and the chance to slow down and connect with others creates an atmosphere that’s difficult to replicate anywhere else. That’s exactly what our Thursday Fire and Food sessions are all about.
Every Thursday, volunteers come together to enjoy an afternoon of campfire cooking, shared experiences, and plenty of laughter. Whether you’re a regular attendee or thinking about joining us for the first time, there is always a place for you around the fire.
A Different Menu Every Week
One of the highlights of our Thursday sessions is the food. We love experimenting with new recipes and trying different campfire cooking techniques, making every week a little different from the last.
Last week, the group decided to try something new: crispy fried pork belly cooked over the fire, served with fragrant jasmine rice and tender purple sprouting broccoli. The combination was a huge success, with everyone enjoying both the cooking process and the delicious meal that followed.
The best part is that our menu is shaped by the people who attend. We know everyone has different tastes and dietary requirements, so we always encourage suggestions and requests. If there’s a dish you’d like to try, a favourite meal you’d like to share with the group, or specific dietary needs we should accommodate, just let us know. We want to make sure there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Making the Most of the Sunshine
The weather was kind to us last week, bringing plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. While we always appreciate good weather, we also know how important it is to stay comfortable when spending time outdoors.
To make the most of the sunny conditions, we put up some shade around our seating area, creating a cool and relaxing space where everyone could enjoy the afternoon. It was the perfect balance: sunshine for those who wanted it and shelter for those looking to escape the heat.
The combination of good weather, great food and friendly company made for a fantastic session.
Campfire Snacks Done Properly
No gathering around the fire would be complete without snacks, and last week’s selection certainly didn’t disappoint.
Throughout the afternoon, we enjoyed fresh baguette slices topped with creamy brie and sweet grapes. The simple combination proved incredibly popular, providing the perfect light bite while the main meal was cooking over the fire.
These shared platters often become a focal point for conversation, giving people a chance to gather, chat and connect while enjoying some delicious food together.
The Return of the Mango Kombucha
Of course, some traditions are too good to leave behind.
Our mango kombucha made another appearance and was once again a firm favourite. Refreshing, fruity and perfect for a warm day, it paired beautifully with both the snacks and the main meal.
Many of our volunteers look forward to seeing what refreshments will be available each week, and the mango kombucha continues to be one of the most requested options.
More Than Just Food
While the food is always a highlight, the real purpose of our Thursday sessions is bringing people together.
These afternoons provide a relaxed and welcoming environment where volunteers can connect, learn new skills, share stories and enjoy being part of a supportive community. Whether you’re helping prepare ingredients, tending the fire, setting up shade, serving food or simply joining in the conversation, every contribution helps create the welcoming atmosphere that makes these sessions so enjoyable.
There is no pressure, no expectation and no need for previous experience. Just come along, get involved as much or as little as you like, and enjoy spending time with a great group of people.
