Despite the hot weather, our fantastic team of volunteers were out and about again on Friday, helping to care for and improve our local green spaces.
Thankfully, temperatures had cooled slightly compared with some of the warmer days we had been experiencing, making it a little more comfortable to get stuck into some practical work outdoors. There is always plenty to do across our parks and open spaces, and Friday was no exception!
Improving Ten Acres
This week, the team decided to concentrate their efforts on the corner of Ten Acres on Cartland Road.
The area is an important part of the local woodland and, like any natural space, it needs regular care and attention. The volunteers spent their time working to improve visibility and access, while also carrying out general woodland maintenance.
Work such as this can make a real difference to how people experience and use the area. Keeping vegetation under control in key locations helps to improve visibility, makes paths and access points easier to use, and can help the woodland feel more open and welcoming.
Of course, woodland maintenance isn’t just about making an area look tidy. Regular volunteer work helps us keep on top of areas that can quickly become overgrown, while allowing us to look after the character and natural environment of the site.
Making a Difference Together
One of the best things about our Friday volunteer sessions is the variety of jobs that can be tackled. Every week can be a little different, depending on what needs doing and what the season brings.
Whether it is vegetation management, improving access, general maintenance or simply helping to keep our green spaces looking their best, every pair of hands makes a difference.
And you don’t need to be an experienced gardener, conservationist or woodland worker to get involved. Our sessions are designed to be accessible to people who want to learn new skills, meet others and spend some time outdoors while contributing to their local environment.
There’s also something particularly satisfying about seeing the results of a few hours’ work. Areas that might have been difficult to access or overgrown can be transformed, and the combined efforts of a group of volunteers can have a noticeable impact.

Our volunteer sessions take place every Friday from 10am, with everyone meeting at the Ten Acres noticeboard, off Cartland Road.
You don’t need to bring a toolbox with you either! All tools and PPE are provided, along with training, so you’ll have everything you need to get started safely.
And perhaps just as importantly, you’ll be joining a friendly group of people who enjoy working together, helping the local environment and making the most of the great outdoors.
