This week our wonderful volunteers laced up their boots and set off around the wilder edges of Hazelwell Park and Ten Acres, where the tidy lawns blur into brambles, leaf litter, and the quiet architecture of trees. These fringes are where nature stretches its limbs, and our team was there to help it thrive.
The session focused on general maintenance and ongoing care of the park’s trees and woodlands. From clearing pathways to tending young saplings and keeping an eye on the health of established trees, every task plays a part in supporting a resilient, living landscape. Woodlands are slow storytellers. They grow in rings and seasons, and our volunteers are now part of that story.
One of the highlights of the day was a delightful wildlife discovery. Nestled among damp leaves and fallen branches were several Scarlet Elf Cups, their vivid red bowls glowing against the earthy browns of winter. These striking fungi always feel like tiny forest treasures, and seeing them in such beautiful condition was a reminder of why this work matters. When habitats are cared for, nature responds in colour.
If you would like to be part of the team, you can join us every Friday from 10am to 2pm. We meet at the noticeboard on Cartland Road before heading into the park together. Whether you can stay for the full session or just part of it, you will be very welcome.
No special experience is needed, just sturdy shoes and a willingness to get involved. It is a great way to spend time outdoors, meet friendly faces, and play a hands on role in caring for Hazelwell Park’s trees and woodlands.
We hope to see you there soon.
