Spotted by Volunteers Kay & Steve (Logged December 2021)
Tawny Owl information can be found here on the RSPB website.
The tawny owl is nocturnal so it is often heard calling at night, but much less often seen. In the daytime, you may see one only if you disturb it inadvertently from its roost site in woodland up against a tree trunk or among ivy. Look for pellets below roosting places.
RSPB Website
The tawny owl has been elusive and we don’t have a photograph yet! We have had reports of volunteers spotting the owls and hearing them around the top end of Ten Acres alongside Ashbrook. However we have also heard it ourselves at the farthest end near Cartland road. We expect they utilise the whole site for hunting. It is suspected there may be a partner. We can confirm the current identified owl is male according to expert Owen Selly who listened to the captured owl hoots and verified the find and thanks to Kay who captured the call using Bird Net.
Ten Acres Habitation
Across the whole site. We do not know where the roost is although we do have an owl box placed midway between basecamp 1 and 2, it is unknown if it is in use.
If you want me and Helen to pop over and check the owk box for you it’s no trouble
yes please! ill shoot a message over xx
